Catalana de Gas, S.A. was a Spanish company based in Barcelona dedicated to the manufacture and distribution of lighting gas and later city gas and natural gas. During a stage it was also dedicated to electricity generation. In 1991 it merged with Gas Madrid to create Gas Natural.
History
It has its origins in 1843 when the "Catalan Society for Gas Lighting" was founded,1 originally dedicated to public gas lighting in the city of Barcelona. It was the first company to manufacture city gas in Spain from coal and has been listed on the stock market since 1853. At the beginning of the 20th century it partially reoriented its business towards the electricity sector and became known as "Catalana de Gas y Electricidad".
In the 1960s it reoriented itself again towards the gas sector, abandoning the electricity generation business, replaced coal with naphtha in the city gas manufacturing process and began its expansion outside Catalonia with the acquisition of the Spanish Gas Company, which operated in Santander, Murcia and the Valencian Community. It was also at the end of the 1960s when natural gas began to arrive in Spain for the first time from Algeria under the direction of Don Josep María Garriga Carbonell. The implementation of natural gas on a large scale, progressively replacing manufactured gas or city gas, would begin in the 1980s. In 1991 Catalana de Gas merged by absorption with Gas Madrid, creating Gas Natural.
